Key Media terms for a magazine

There are many different key terms that magazine editors as such use often when analysing magazines. These include;

  • Bar code: These are a strip of bars that are located on a front cover of the magazine. They are used to track sales by retailers.
  • Masthead:  This is usually printed at the top of the front page. The masthead gives details about the publisher, staff and the contact information. It can also be found on pages such as the contents  or a leader page. An example of when the masthead is on a contents page is in a football matchday programme. The masthead is also favourably used for the logo too, giving out the name of the magazine and the chosen fonts used.
  • Publisher: These are the people that publish the magazine and gain a profit from them.
  • Strapline: This is a sentence under the heading which 'sells' the magazine article to the reader and keeps them interested. These are key as straplines often determine readers reactions and whether they will continue buying the magazine.
  • Consumer magazines: These have a large market range, as they continue to focus on a broad range of topics.
